My Favorite Essential Oils + My Anxiety Fix

Hi, friends!! I want to start this post out by saying that I am not an essential oil expert.  I simply wanted to share my favorite oils and how I use them. I have been using Essential Oils since high school.  My mom and Granma forced them on me so I had no choice. Luckily, I ended up loving them! No joke, I would come home with a sunburn and my mom would throw any oil my way.  Wake up in the middle of the night with a stomach ache? My mom would point me to the cabinet with the bag of essential oils. Sometimes essential oils can be intimidating because you may not be sure how to use them, but I find myself referring to the website constantly for advice on how to use a specific oil.  There are various brands of oils. My drug of choice is doTerra.  You can find any and all information on their oils here.

  1. Breathe

Breathe is great to use when allergy or cold like symptoms are present. If I have a stuffy nose I either rub this in the palm of my hands and deeply inhale, or place a small amount around my nostrils.  If I have a cough I will rub this on my chest.

2. Lemon

Lemon is unique because it can be diffused for a fresh scent throughout the house, dropped into water for a detox drink, or thrown into a spray bottle to use as a cleaner.  I haven’t tried using it as cleaner, but I occasionally place a few drops in a glass of warm water to start the day.

3. Peppermint

Peppermint can be used in your smoothie for a little extra kick or mixed with water for a mouth rinse.  I use it mostly when I have an upset stomach. I’ll drop ONE drop on my tongue and it settles my stomach within minutes. The reason that I put emphasis on only using ONE drop is because I accidentally dropped three in my mouth on one occasion and it took the breath right out of my lungs. My mouth was on fire and I couldn’t catch my breath. Learn from my mistakes. I don’t mean to scare you because this is one that I can’t live without.

4. Frankincense

doTerra sells veggie capsules that you can fill with your oils of choice, as long as they are intended to be taken internally.  In high school, my mom would have breakfast on the table with a capsule full of Frankincense next to the plate.  This habit has continued and this is to keep the immune system strong.  If I begin feeling sick, I’ll drop 2 drops under my tongue for an immediate effect.

5. DigestZen

This oil is known as doTERRA’s “tummy tamer”, how cute is that? If you’ve eaten something that doesn’t sit well, you’ve become bloated from your meal, or you just have an uneasy stomach, you can add a few drops of this to your water.  I personally place a few drops in my hands and rub it directly on my abdomen.

6. Lavender

This oil is another relaxant and can be diffused or applied to your pillow before bed. It’s also known for reducing the appearance of skin imperfections. I use it on blemishes to help the healing process and reduce the chance of scarring. I also use it if I have a cut, bug bite, or burn.  This oil takes the “sting” away.

7. Melaleuca

Also known as “Tea Tree Oil”. This oil is used to cleanse and purify the skin for a healthy complexion. It can be used on skin irritations to soothe the skin.  Add a drop or two to your facial cleanser for added cleansing properties. I mostly use this oil for hives. I’m allergic to dogs and cats, believe it or not. Almost every time my fur baby decides to give me a kiss I’ll get a hive or two.  I usually rub a small amount of Melaleuca to that area and the hive dissipates.

8. The Liquid Xanax: Balance and Serenity

These two combined are my holy grail of oils. I’m someone who suffers from anxiety, as I’m sure many of you do. It’s the worst, isn’t it? I used to take daily medication for anxiety (I’m very open about it… it’s a sickness that many just brush off.  I’ll save that for another post) until I discovered a book that changed my life and these two oils. You can find the book here. I rub Balance on the bend of my elbows, my wrists, behind my ears, and on the back of my neck. I repeat those same steps with Serenity.  It doesn’t happen immediately but give it time to kick in and you will thank me later. I keep both of these with me at all times.  If I’m feeling a bit anxious during the day, I’ll place a few drops in my palms, rub them together, and deeply inhale. If you don’t have an oil diffuser I recommend investing in one.  I love diffusing Serenity as I’m getting ready for bed and into my sleep.

I hope this helped you in some way. I love my essential oils and have almost completely replaced taking medicine with them. I’ve never been one that enjoys taking medicine so a natural healant is a dream. I’m not against taking medicine at all. There are some conditions that only oils can’t fix. I 100% recommend taking the leap and enjoying the EO world.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  The doTERRA website is so informative. Check it out when you get a chance.
